Dead zones on rise in the U.S. coastal waters

More than 300 coastal water bodies now have oxygen levels so low they threaten commercial and recreational fishing, according to the report from several federal agencies that was sent Friday to congressional leaders.

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill occurred after the report was completed. But the Gulf already was home to the largest dead zones in the world besides those in the Baltic Sea.
