Matthew Bates is pursuing a master's degree in Water Resources Engineering at UC Davis. Matthew grew up in a small ranching community in the foothills of the southern Sierra Nevadas, where irrigation, water rights, snowmelt, and water levels in the family well were topics of frequent conversation. After working for a local hydroelectric plant in his youth, he attended Cal State Long Beach as a President's Scholar graduating with a B.S. in Computer Science. While working as a software developer for KPMG LLP., he joined the Los Angeles professional chapter of Engineers Without Borders, and soon became the professional mentor of student chapter of EWB at the University of Southern California, leading them on their first site survey trip for a new water system in La Estanzuela, Honduras. Matthew has also pioneered a new volunteer teacher program in Amman, Jordan, performed organic crop experiments in rural Thailand, and brought water conservation education to local classrooms. Matthew joined the WaterSISWEB team in November 2008 to supervise the Miscellaneous category.

Matthew loves hiking, volunteerism, and water sports, and has always had more stamps in his passport than candles on his birthday cake.
