Scientific Information Syndication WEBsiteS (SISWEBS)

SISWEBS is a family of collaborative websites, which provide scientists, researchers and professionals with free service to know what is new and popular on the web, and can be personalized for users within their area of expertise. SISWEBS combine social bookmarking and syndication with a form of non-hierarchical and democratic editorial control. SISWEBS offer powerful free tools and rich social platform for scientific and professional users, and in the process, turn entire scientific web into a writable, participatory and interactive media. Using SISWEBS is a way for Internet users to store, organize, share and search bookmarks of web pages. All the content of these websites are submitted and voted on by professional users.

Unlike many other social bookmaking websites, SISWEBS are aimed primarily at scientists, researchers, and professionals of different areas of science. Thus, each SISWEB is dedicated to one area of science (e.g. WaterSISWEB is a website of SISWEBS family, dedicated to the area of Water Resources).

On SISWEBS, users’ votes train a filter, and the users will begin to be recommended links filtered to their tastes. By creating free accounts, users post links to content on the web and then other users have the opportunity to vote for or against them to appear more or less prominently on SISWEBS. Through a user-based ranking system, users can promote the links to the front page of the SISWEBS.

Users can also customize their view through filtration. They can limit their view to a particular sub-area of interest in the area of the SISWEB. For instance a WaterSISWEB user who is merely interested in fluid mechanics links can avoid seeing groundwater contamination links by customizing his/her view. Users can customize the links’ types and geographical areas, as well.

While posting a link, users “tag” the posted link with keywords of their choice. These keywords will be helpful in finding a proper link trough searches with the search engine available in SISWEBS. By allowing free tagging, a folksonomy is gradually developed.

SISWEBs are not run by their owners and there are users who mostly manage the websites. Different tools and methods are also developed for finding, tracking and limiting the activities of those users who always vote against the comments or posted links of same users.

Our Team

SISWEBS is being managed by a hard working group of volunteers. SISWEBS is lead by Kaveh Madani and Kosha Mahmodieh. After seeing a simple weblog being used for sharing political news while living in Canada, Kaveh thought about establishing dedicated scientific bookmarking websites for professionals. After migration to the United States, he developed this idea after visiting some other social bookmarking websites used for different purposes. He started the SISWEBS project in late 2007 in collaboration with Kosha, after he told Kosha about his idea in a family party. Since then, other valuable people have joined the SISWEBS family and we are always looking for having more talented and hardworking people joining our team. If you want to serve your professional community, SISWEBS is a right place for you.
